The joys of Being an Grandparent

By Omitunde Slack of African American Family Connection

I am enjoying the privilege of playing games with my grand daughter and feeling the joy of her imagination in my life. We spend some magical times together and I Give Thanks for the opportunity.

There are some in my peer group 50 Plus that have serious health issues. These issues prevent them from doing simple things like preparing a meal or getting dressed.

My sister is currently in a long term care facility to get physical therapy to strengthen her body. She cannot get around alone without some assistance without falling and injuring herself.

I feel really bad for her because we are only a year apart and she has many health issues that keep her confined to home and in need of some assistance.

We are in different states and she is my only sister. She has four children, three in her city and they don't visit her enough in my opinion.

They take for granted that she is okay and leave the care up to the professionals. I realize that it is difficult to accept that mama is not the same as she once was.

She can't cook big holiday meals and babysit or loan us money. She needs to be cared for like she cared for us when we were children.

When I call her, we laugh and sing and have a good time on the phone. I believe that my calls brighten her day and allow her to focus some good energy on healing and getting better.

I don't entertain any pity-party stuff. I am honest with her and I ask about her care. I want her to get quality care and good food, I want her to be taken to the bathroom if she can't make it on her own. I want her to be honest with me about how she feels about being in this condition.

I would not want to wake up in a hospital or medical facility every day. I make the best effort I can to stay healthy. I avoid stress and self abuse.

If anything changes in the status of my health, I mush take the responsibility for it because I am in control of what I do daily to support my best state of health.

How do we care for our aging parents and siblings and other relatives that need nursing assistance?

Do we give them our best?

Are we complacent about what we can do?

Just a phone call or visit can help strengthen the healing process and give them hope. Not showing them how much we feel sorry for them.

I love my grand daughter for reminding me to be grateful for every moment we spend together.

She sang a song for my sister. "This little light of mine".
It made her smile and feel some love.

Contributor's Note

I want to bring attention to our aging loved ones who are fighting to hold on to their independence. We can do a better job of caring for them. After all, we could find ourselves in the same circumstances...

Our grandchildren give us great new perspective on life when we start to forget how great life is.
