Are you being bullied at work?
How do you know if you are being bullied at your job? Is there some anxiety in communicating w/ your superiors? Does your supervisor or manager or director use insulting words when speaking to you? Do they tell you not to talk after they ask you a question? Are you being singled out and your work being carefully scrutinized more than anyone else in your department? Are any mistakes you make being documented, but others that make the same or similar mistakes are not written up or documented? Are you hesitant or afraid to meet with your supervisor, manager, or director alone for fear of how they behave? Have you gone to the EEO Office, the EAP (Employee Assistance Program, or the supervisor of your supervisor and othing was done? If you can answer yes to any of these questions, you are being bullied. You feel helpless b/c you cannot afford to lose your job. You are afraid of getting reprimanded b/c bullys are good at making everything look like it is your fault. Your heart beats fast, your hands sweat, your mouth gets dry and you cringe at the sound of their footsteps in the hall. When your mailbox dings w/ an email from this person, you become poised to fight another battle in which you cannot win or even say anything that will change the circumstances and get things back to normal. You feel like a target and you even blame yourself at first and you feel ashamed. How did this happen, when did it start, have they always felt this way? Why, you keep asking yourself why, what am I doing that warrants this type of treatment. Because you feel like you have no power and start to question yourself. The shame and embarrassment you experience is a combination of frustration and anger that shows up as extreme anxiety. A loss of focus can cause you to feel insecure about your ability to do your job and you make more mistakes. This kind of harassment does not fall into the category of sexual harassment or race discrimination. It is very to prove and most of the time it is covered up by those in upper management because they want these people around. These bullys are on a power trip and have no conscious for making your life a living hell. My advice is to file a claim against them if you are brave enough and take a stand. Don't fall apart, document everything and follow through. Make a pest of yourself to whoever will listen that is in a position to make some impact. This may be Human Resources if the person's supervisor will not have a conversation with this person. Don't expect anyone in the office to take sides with you. They will not jeopardize their job for you. *You have the right to ask another employee or supervisor to be present whenever they want to meet with you. (This is to protect you from this person saying anything to you without a witness) *Don't be surprised if they tell you that you cannot have anyone in the room with you when they want to meet with you. It is your right if your feel threatened or afraid to be in the room alone with them because of the tone of how they speak with you. *When in their presence, say as little a possible. "you can can say, I have no comment at this time" *If you get written up, respond in writing and submit any documents between you and this person to your personal file *Document and keep every written communication between you and this person. *Do not expect the person that consents to being present when you meet with the bully to say anything in your defense. Hold you position and stay calm until you can either get action from upper management or you decide to leave. If you do decide to leave, do in your own time on your own terms. Because they do not want to fire you, you may be able to claim unemployment or file a lawsuit if you file a grievance and no one investigates it and dismisses it as frivolous. In my case, I will need to go to an outside EEO State level organization. My case is still pending I have not been fired yet. |
